Officers attended and engaged with the man before he was passed into the care of medical professionals.

An ambulance was also sent to Brook Lane, a road leading to a footbridge over the bypass, to assist police and took the man to a place of safety.

The closure caused “extensive delays” with bus company Arriva taking to social media to warn passengers that its services had been affected.

It said: “All traffic is attempting to travel via the town.

“This will cause extensive delays. Please be patient as our vehicles try to maintain service.

“This may affect other services due to driving staff delays.”

The road was reopened just after 10.50am.
