A SPATE of arson attacks are putting a sports centre - and lives - at risk, according to firefighters.

Maidstone fire crews were called twice to deal with fires in the grounds of the YMCA Centre in Melrose Close, Maidstone, on February 12. A pile of rubbish and some had tyres had been set alight

Six days later they were back again after five large conifer trees were deliberately set on fire. The trees were destroyed.

Two days later, more trees were set alight and within days, on Monday this week, firefighters were called out again, this time twice in one night.

The fires have all broken out between 8pm and 9.30pm. Maidstone and Malling police are investigating and officers from both the community safety unit and the crime group have visited the scene.

PC Mark Hedges said: "We have visited the YMCA to advise them on further crime prevention measures, but we would urge anyone who had any information to contact us immediately.

"Those who have been responsible for these fires should be aware that these trees ignite very quickly and the fire could cause serious injury."

A Kent Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said: "Some of these fires were set close to the sports centre and the flames could easily have spread to the building.

"Arsonists should realise that they are unnecessarily tying up resources that might be needed at a genuine incident elsewhere and as a result they could be putting lives at risk."
