Taxi drivers could be forced out of business by measures aimed at tackling air pollution.
Maidstone borough Council is making cabbies exchange their high-emissions vehicles for greener alternatives.
From January, the authority will have the power to reject licence applications if a driver doesn't own a hybrid, electric, or low emissions vehicle.
But Neil Cox, of the Maidstone Taxi Proprietors Association, warned as the only environmentally-friendly vehicle available costs £56,000 many drivers will be forced out of business.
