Windies a big attraction

JON FORDHAM: defends decision to charge full admission to supporters arriving at Kent games after tea

KENT members hoping to watch the county take on the West Indies at Beckenham on June 21 are urged to act quickly.

Only a few hundred tickets are left for the showdown and Kent’s commercial manager Jon Fordham is already certain the game will be a 7,000 sell-out.

“The way advanced ticket sales have taken off since we launched the new website leads us to believe that there will be no tickets for sale on the day at Beckenham for the West Indies game,” said Mr Fordham.

Mr Fordham also confirmed that the county are standing by this season’s decision to charge full admission to those arriving at Kent games after tea.

A full charge is now made for admission through to 5.30pm, which has caused some consternation to supporters who can only get to the ground after work.

“As far as it goes as a purely commercial decision, then I have to say it is the correct one,” he added. “We are a business and there are a lot of people down the years who have watched two or three hours of cricket every evening and never paid us a penny.

“There’s no way I’d turn up at Charlton Athletic for the last half hour of a game and expect to get in for free. We are looking at ways of softening the blow to supporters, but it is something we will not be reviewing until the end of the season.”

The county also received a handful of complaints over the lack of banked seating at Sunday’s totesport League game at The Nevill that attracted a crowd of 4,500.

The club did bring in 3,500 additional seats for the game, but some supporters complained that views were restricted for those who came late in the day.

“We are afraid this is a consequence of playing at out-grounds like Tunbridge Wells as this isn’t a problem we encounter at St Lawrence,” said Mr Fordham.

“This is why we encourage our supporters to get to the ground as early as possible, especially when we’re at an out-ground like The Nevill or The Mote. That way they get the best possible view.”

Kent supporters hoping to follow Kent’s Twenty20 clash with Surrey at The Brit Oval on Friday, July 9, will be disappointed however.

Seating is restricted to 7,000 while building work continues at the Kennington Test venue and all available tickets have now been sold.

Surrey are asking Kent supporters not to travel on spec as there will be no tickets available on the day.
