Southall issues rallying cry

Neville Southall says the players remain positive

Margate v Ashford Town (Middx)

Margate first team coach Neville Southall has pleaded for “the town to get behind the team” to help the Gate escape relegation from the Ryman League Premier Division.

Margate are just two points above bottom club Heybridge, who have four matches in hand and Southall said: “There’s no point in kidding ourselves, we are in a dire position.

“But I still feel we can get out of it because the players and the staff all feel positive. However, we really need the people of Margate to get behind us now.

“If they come along in extra numbers and get behind us, they can be like a 12th man and I know well what a difference that sort of positive support can make in this situation, especially to younger players."

Southall accepts that the next month is likely to be “make or break”, starting with Saturday’s home game with Ashford Town(Middlesex), whom the Gate have already beaten 1-0 away in September.

Southall added: “If we can do the double over them it will give the lads just the sort of lift they need."
