WELLING midfielder Matt Bodkin has emerged as a shock transfer target for League 1 Gillingham.

The Gills kept tabs on Bodkin during the second half of the season and have invited him to join them for pre-season training.

Bodkin, who is a free agent, was only released by Gillingham in May 2005.

Welling manager Adrian Pennock said: "Matt is quite cautious about the offer because he has been there before and it hasn’t worked out."

The Wings boss released defenders Barry Ashby and Lee Gledhill along with midfielder Rob Owen last week. Back-up keeper Darren Ibrahim also departed.
