Half-time stalemate at Glanford Park

CHRIS HOPE: The Gills skipper made an important block to keep his side on level terms

Scunthorpe United 0 - 0 Gillingham

GILLINGHAM have been unable to find a breakthrough in the first half in the driving rain at Glanford Park this afternoon.

The first shot of any meaning came after seven minutes, but Richard Hind's drive from 25-yards was comfortably swallowed by Jason Brown in the Gillingham goal.

Gills breathed a sigh of relief in the 23rd minute when Chris Hope did superbly well to get in the way of a Wayne Corden shot after Ian Cox had unsuccessfully tried to play the offside trap.

In a first half of few opportunities the closest the visitors have come to breaking the deadlock is a Darren Byfield effort, but he blazed over the bar after being well found by an Andy Hessenthaler cross.

Boss Neale Cooper earlier named an unchanged line-up for the club's toughest game of the season so far.

Danny Spiller shook off the knock he picked up in the midweek draw at Port Vale and was able to retain his place alongside Darren Byfield in attack.

The home side have also gone with an unchanged line-up, which means no place in the 16 for former Gill Tommy Johnson.

Gillingham: Brown, Rose, Cox, Hope, Jackman, Hessenthaler, Flynn, Pouton, Crofts, Spiller, Byfield. Subs: Knowles, Johnson, Jarvis, Shields, Corneille.
