KENT have made opening batsman David Fulton their club captain for 2003 after easing him into the role of championship skipper last term.

The former University of Kent student turns 31 in November and is already looking forward to his first campaign in full charge having shared the limited overs and first-class duties with Matthew Fleming for the 2002 campaign.

“I learned a great deal from Matthew Fleming last season and our partnership worked well, but I’m looking forward to leading us in all competitions,” said Fulton. “In my opinion we have an excellent squad of players and I’m sure we can do well next season."

Fulton’s first job in charge was to capture the signing of Somerset’s combative 22-year-old all-rounder Peter Trego on a two-year deal.

Trego, who has been with the west country county for three seasons, played for England Under-19s in 2000 and hit his highest first-class score this summer, 140 for Somerset against West Indies A.

Meanwhile, Kent’s player of the season Martin Saggers has been selected in England’s squad to contest next week’s Hong Kong Sixes starting on November 2. Saggers, who recently signed a new long-term contract with the Club, was the country's joint-leading wicket taker in 2002 having claimed over 200 first-class wickets in the last three seasons.
