Three residents of an old people's home had to be rescued by firefighters when a blaze broke out in a bedroom early today.

Crews wearing breathing apparatus carried the two men and a woman from the building in Lennard Road, Folkestone.

Other residents were moved to a safe part of the home.

Crew manager Andy Batchelor, from Folkestone fire station, said: "The woman in the room where the fire started was incredibly lucky.

"There was so much smoke in the room we did not expect to find anyone alive in there."

All three people were treated for inhalation of smoke by paramedics.

Fire crews from Folkestone and Hythe were called to the blaze, which started at 3.30am.

Once the residents had been evacuated, the fire was put out quickly. It was contained to one bedorom with smoke damage to the nearby area.

The cause is still being investigated.
