Hammer attack thug left victim with permanent brain damage

by Keith Hunt

A thug is facing jail for a terrifying hammer attack that left his victim in a coma with life threatening injuries.

James Brown admitted causing 41-year-old Peter Bangay grievous bodily harm with intent at a party in Sturdee Avenue, Gillingham, on April 12.

Peter Forbes, prosecuting, said it was a grave offence, as Mr Bangay suffered permanent brain damage and emergency surgery had to be performed.

He said: "I am told there has since been some improvement in his condition. He has been in a coma. There is some movement and he may even have begun to talk.

"This was an injury caused by a hammer to the head."

Mr Forbes said an update on Mr Bangay's condition would be obtained.

Crispian Cartwright, defending, said Brown, 37, was full of remorse. He was anxious to know his fate.

Brown, of Portland Road, Gillingham, was remanded in custody for reports. No date was set for sentence.

Joanne Shearer, 32, also of Portland Road, appeared in the dock with Brown, accused of perverting the course of justice.

She was not asked to enter a plea and her hearing was adjourned until July 10. She was granted conditional bail.
