Highways Agency project sponsor Anita Waterton said: “The existing lights are coming to the end of their life and need to be replaced to maintain safe and reliable journeys on this vital route.

"The new lights will be more energy efficient and although there will be fewer light columns, full lighting will be maintained at all key points.

“The work has been carefully planned working with Kent County Council and the Port of Dover, and will be carried out overnight, when we know traffic flows are lowest, to minimise disruption.”

The work will take place between 8pm and 6am. It will be carried out in two phases; the first phase will use a lane closure on the London-bound carriageway and the second using a carriageway closure on the coastbound carriageway.

A clearly signed diversion will be in place during the carriageway closure via the A256 and A20.

While working on the Guston, Duke of York’s roundabout (for the A258), narrow lanes and temporary traffic lights will be in place.
